All of us may not turn out to be world-class musicians, but we can aspire to be world-class individuals with a positive character. Success in life is not determined as much by ability as it is approach. This is in reference to the values we use to accomplish our vision and achieve our mission.  Perhaps the most important skills that you can acquire in the task of developing a positive character include, but are not limited to:

1.   Being punctual.  Early is on time. 

 

2.   Not Lolly Gagging. 

 

3.   Not being defiant.

 

4.   Always being prepared with the correct materials - not assuming somebody else will have what you need.

 

5.   Making a daily effort to improve musically and personally.  

 

6.   Planning ahead.  Know when things are due and don’t double book yourself.  (I don't want to hear I had this or that to do last night.)  Band is like every other class, and work needs to be done on time.

 

7.   Using proper hygiene and dressing appropriately.

 

8.   Being responsible for your actions.  (No "buts")

 

9.   Following all rules, expectations, and procedures 

 

10. Cooperating with fellow band members and everybody that is involved with the band.  If you see them, they are involved.

 

11.  Contributing and making an effort, even if you're in a bad mood.  

 

12.  In a group setting, only speaking when invited.  This is done by raising your hand.   Don’t blurt out.

 

13.  Keeping equipment you use in good working order before you have to use it.

 

14.  Putting things where they belong.

 

15.  Avoiding negative chatter or gossip.

 

16.  Taking responsibility in keeping all areas of the classroom (Band Room) clean.  If you see a mess left by somebody else, take responsibility and clean it up.

 

18.  Being humble.  Not gloating. 

 

19.  Taking advice.

 

20.  Being friendly even when you're in a bad mood or to somebody you don’t like.  Have a smile on your face and act happy.  It’s okay to pretend.   

 

21.  Leading by example.  

 

22.  Not giving up and quitting.  Keep trying until you succeed.

 

23.  Treating everyone and everything with respect and care.

 

24.  Not using electronic devices such as cell phones at school.  

 

25.  Knocking on doors before entering.

 

26.  Not turning the classroom (Band Room) into a place to hang out.  We are here to learn.

 

27.  Only using what belongs to you, even if somebody offers.

 

28.  Participating everyday.  (a few exceptions)

 

29.  Not chewing gum in the band room.

 

30.  Only drinking water when playing an instrument. It is "gross" drinking other things and playing an instrument.  

 

31.  Not talking when you aren’t supposed to.

 

32.  Looking at whoever is talking.

 

33.  Taking pride in all things you do, even when other people aren’t looking.

 

34.  Being courageous. Do what's right even when you see people doing wrong.  

 

35.  Accepting that you may be doing something wrong when you aren't even aware of it.

 

36.  Not using drugs, smoking, or drinking.

 

37.  Realizing not everybody needs to hear what you say. Just go with the flow.

 

38.  Being a good listener.

 

39.  Not running in the Band Room.

 

40.  No Horse Play.

 

41.  No P.D.A.  (Public Display of Affection)

 

42.  Being where you're supposed to be.

 

43.  Not bugging or getting on other people's nerves.

 

44.  Taking a hint.

 

45.  Talking about band and other organizations in a positive light in public, even if you think differently.  

 

46.  Having patience. 

 

47.  Delaying reward.

 

48.  Not being selfish.

 

49.  Not being a bully and standing up for people getting bullied.

 

50.  Not making fun of someone, even if he or she is your friend.

 

51.  Giving gratitude.

 

52.  Being empathetic.

 

53.  Hanging out only with people that are good for you.

 

54.  Using social media responsibly.  Don’t put stuff out there that you wouldn’t want your potential boss to know about.

 

55.  Not worrying about having a girlfriend/boyfriend.

 

56.  Knowing the unspoken rules and following them.

 

57.  Eating healthy food.

 

58.  Trying new things.

 

59.  Trying things you didn't like in the past.

 

60.  Not fighting fire with fire.

 

61.  Taking care of relationships that are most importarnt.

 

62.  Knowing when it's time to work and time to play.

 

63.  Reading the moods and feelings of other people. 

 

64.  Looking out for you neighbor.

 

65.  Turning your cheek.  (It's not a sign of weakness.)

 

66.  Being a creator, not a consumer.

 

67.  Not being argumentative.

 

68.  Limiting time spent in front of the TV and/or playing video games.

 

69.  Taking care of your body.

 

70.  Letting things go.  

 

71.  Being in control of you emotions at all times.

 

72.  Not cursing.

 

73.  Not being a jealous or envious person.
