With the start of a new year comes new teachers and classes.  In striving for all students’ success, it is necessary that the environment be conducive to learning and efficient.  Therefore, it is important to understand the procedures and regulations (rules) for being members of the band.

  3. Do not be a distraction to people in class by playing your instrument or talking.

  4. Do not bring food, candy, or drinks to class, other than water with a lid.

  5. Do not use electronic devices not used for class purposes.

  6. Do not socialize in class.

  7. Do not horse around.

  8. Do not run.

  9. Do not sit things on instruments.

General Band Rules
Storing Instrument at the Middle School

PROCEDURES:

 

Students will store instruments at the middle school when not in band. This is because practice at home is nessasary. 

 

8th Grade:  Since you have band 1st block, students will bring instrument straight from home.  After band, students will store instrument in a classroom at the middle school. Talk with your team teachers to decide what class to store them in.  I suggest storing it in your last block class to prevent you having  to travel to pick it up at the end of the day.

 

7th Grade:  Keep your instruments with you 1st block.  You will meet 2nd block in the lobby with your instrument.  After band, students will store instruments in a classroom at the middle school.  Talk with your team teachers to decide what class to store them in.  I suggest storing it in your last block class to prevent you having to travel to pick it up at the end of the day. 

 

6th Grade:  At the beginning of the day, store your instrument in your 2nd block class.  You will meet 3rd block in the lobby with your instrument.  After band, students will store instrument s in a classroom at the middle school.  Talk with your team teachers to decide what class to store them in.  I suggest storing it in your last block class to prevent you having to travel to pick it up at the end of the day.    

 

PROCEDURES:

 

8th Grade:  You will dropped off at the high school band room every morning by a partent, by bus, or by walking from the middle school.  

  1. If dropped off by a parent, you may be dropped off at the band room where the high school students enter.

  2. If you get dropped off by a bus, you will enter the front of the high school and walk back to the band room.  

  3. Some students may choose to eat middle school breakfast.  If this is the case, then students will walk to the band room after.

You will be taken back to the middle school by walking back with the teacher.

 

7th and 6th Grade:  You will be picked by the teacher in the front lobby of the middle school and escorted to the high school band room.  You will be taken back to the middle school by walking back with the teacher.

 

 

REGULATIONS:

 

  1. Do not horse around.

  2. Do not run.

  3. Keep up with the teacher.

  4. Stay in the group.

  5. Stay to the right side of the road.

 

Travel to and from the Band Room

REGULATIONS:

 

  1. Enter the rehearsal room in a quiet and orderly manner.

 

  2.  Do not horse around.

 

  3.  Do not run.

 

  4.  Do not socialize before class.

 

  5.  Be responsible for your own                         materials. 

 

  6.  Always warm up with good sounds.

 

  7.  Sit in your assigned seat.

 

  8.  Set up and start warming up within              5 minutes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PROCEDURES:

 

Step 1:  Put backpacks and other belongings in front of the bulletin board.

 

Step 2:  Turn all assgnments, forms, and money into the correct collection box. Make sure your name is on everything you turn in.

 

Step 3:  If you know before class your horn isn't working, then tell me immediately.

 

Step 4:  If you need accessories (reeds, valve oil, etc.) or music, let me know at this point.  During class is not the time.  

 

Step 5:  Make sure stands and chair are in the correct place, and put music folder on the stand. Have your pencil (no pen).

 

Step 6:  Check the board for the day’s rehearsal outline.

 

Step 7:  Get instrument out, close the case, and sit with it in your assigned seat or location.  

  1. Flutes, Clarinets, and Trumpets will assemble instruments at their seats and store cases under their seats.

  2. French Horns, Trombones, Euphoniums, and Tubas will put together horns over by the fridge.  

  3. Percussionists will make sure the instruments being used for the day are set up and will stand next to them.

 

Step 8:  Warm up.

 

Step 9:  Make sure your horn is in working order.  Fix it now if you can. If it's something you can’t fix, tell me as soon as possible.

 

Step 10:  Rehearsal begins each day when the conductor steps onto the podium.  Stop moving and/or playing and listen.  

Entering the Band Room

REGULATIONS:

 

  1. Only speak when invited. This is done by raising your hand.   Don’t blurt out.

  2. You must play your instrument.  (a few exceptions)  

  3. While the director is working with another person or section, you are expected to sit quietly and/or silently “air-play” what you need to work on.

  4. Maintain good body and horn posture.

  5. Give the person speaking your full attention.

  6. Only ask to use the restroom in an emergency.  You will be allowed to go.  If you ask to go on a consistent basis (my idea of a consistent basis), then we will have to fix the situation.

Rehearsal

REGULATIONS: 

Don’t get up or start talking when you think rehearsal is over.  I will dismiss you.  

  1. Exit the rehearsal room in a quiet and orderly manner. 

  2. Do not horse around.

  3. Do not run.

  4. Do not socialize. 

  5. Be responsible for your own materials and equipment.  Put everything back where you found in the way you found it. 

  6. Set up chairs and stands for next class. 

End of Rehearsal

PROCEDURES:

 

 

Step 1:  Let me see it first, if it needs repairing.

 

Step 2:  If I can’t fix it, then you will fill out a repair form.

 

Step 3:  Take out your mouthpiece and keep it.  I may have a loaner horn for you to play, or you will be doing mouthpiece work.  You will be expected to improve everyday one way or another even if you don’t have your horn.

 

Step 4:  If it is your instrument and not the school’s, you will take the form home to be signed.  Your parents or guardians needs to know where your horn is and that there may be repair cost involved.

 

Step 5: The horn will be sent off for repair.

 

Step 6:  Your family will get a call from the music store telling them what is wrong with your instrument and how much it will cost.

 

Instrument Repair

REGULATIONS:

 

  1. Participation in concerts and performances is required if you are in band and for a grade in band.  It’s the whole point! 

  2. Enter where you are going in a quiet and orderly manner. 

  3. Do not horse around.

  4. Do not run.

  5. Only play when instructed to play.  

  6. Be responsible for your own materials. 

  7. Be punctual. 

  8. Follow all school rules at every performance regardless of when or where it is.

 

 

 

 

WHAT TO WEAR:

ALL BLACK HEAD TO TOE

  1. Boys must wear collared, button up shirts with dress pants, socks, and shoes.

  2. Girls may only wear dresses that are below the knee while sitting.

  3. No flip-flops.

  4. No hats.

Concerts and Performances

REGULATIONS:

 

  1. No talking.

  2. Do not horse around.

  3. Do not run.

 

 

PROCEDURES: 

 

Step 1. Follow me out the band room door in a straight line, into the large grassy area behind the band room.  Carry your instrument if you already have it with you.

 

Step 2.  Roll will be checked and students will clearly say “here” when their name is called.

 

Step 3.  When given the all clear, the same procedures apply for reentering the band room.

Fire Drill

REGULATIONS:

 

  1. No talking.

  2. Do not horse around.

  3. Do not run.

 

PROCEDURES:

 

Step 1. Move away from the walls of the band room.

 

Step 2. Make yourself as small as possible on the floor and put your head under your chair.   

Earthquake Drill

PROCEDURES:

 

Step 1. Follow me out the band room door in a straight line, with your instrument, into the hallway.

 

Step 2.  Kneel down against the wall in a ball and cover your head.

 

Step 3.  When given the all clear, the same procedures apply for reentering the band room.

Tornado Drill

REGULATIONS:

 

  1. No talking.

  2. Do not horse around.

 

PROCEDURES:

 

Step 1. We will stay where we are in silence.  

Step 2.  All windows will be covered.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE:  If we are traveling to or from the band room, we will return to the school not on lockdown.  If the whole campus is on lockdown, it will be left up to me to decide what to do.  I have a couple of places already in mind that I will not share with the public.

Lockdown

PROCEDURES:

 

All money will be turned in at the beginning of class, before anything is set up.  Make sure that the "note" section of the bottom of the check has the name of the student and what the check is paying for.
